He played basketball at the state level and served as the school captain at Jesus Anglo-Indian School in Kollam, Kerala. In 2013, he started working for the IPS as the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) for the Karkala subdivision in the Karnataka district of Udupi. In 2015, he was moved to the Udupi district and elevated to the position of Superintendent of Police (SP). Annamalai IPS was assigned to the Chikmagalur district as the SP in the year 2016, where he had to contend with the difficult Maoist insurgency.
In 2018, he was sent to Bengaluru to serve as the south division’s deputy commissioner of police (DCP). He was in charge of upholding peace and order in one of the city’s most populated and varied neighborhoods.
